B&B Hospital: Providing healthcare with humanity

The healthcare sector is fast evolving. As new trends like medical tourism are finding its
hotspots in the state, a large number of speciality and super speciality hospitals has
mushroomed across the state. But with rising numbers, the competitiveness has grown
to an extent that often one of the key elements of Medicare is missing –Care. The human element is
missing. It is just business and targets, the patients relegated to commodities. The situation has led to
fleecing and unethical healthcare. B&B Memorial Hospital equipped with advanced treatment facilities which began its operations in Thrikkakara temple in Kochi recently promises to be different. The group’s vision is to construct their legacy on the care they provide. Their motto – Healthcare with Humanity-- captures the whole set of standards they aim to set in bringing affordable, excellent healthcare to people.

Nithin Chandrashekhar, its managing partner, looked calm and composed when I met him at the
multi-specialty hospital. “The hospital is dedicated in the memory of my grandparents Bhaskaran
Nair and Bhageerathi Kunjamma,” he begins, “It is thus founded on ethics of providing good health
care facilities.”

As a family, they wanted to provide affordable healthcare to people in the surrounding areas.
The middle class and lower middle class are often in dire straits when it comes to choosing health
care. The multi-specialty hospitals usually come with a high price tag and the budget hospitals lack
enough advanced facilities. “At B&B, we have set up the most advanced equipment in various departments, without shooting up the cost,” he says.

Nithin, a lawyer by profession, was earlier working in the Middle East. After a few years, he came
back to Kerala and opened Baywatch beach homes in Cherai which is running successfully. After its
success, in 2010 along with his sister Dr. Nithya Chandrasekhar, he conceptualised B&B hospital. It took them eight years to finally build the hospital brick-by-brick. Nithya’s husband Dr Prabhu
Ranjith took charge as the medical director of the hospital.

The hospital has various specialty wings such as general medicine, laparoscopic surgery, orthopedics,
gynaecology, anaesthesiology pediatrics, radiology ENT, dermatology, ophthalmology, critical
care, and executive health check-up. The hospital also has super specialties such as cardiology,
neurology, nephrology, neonatology, gastro surgery, neurosurgery, and plastic surgery There are
20 doctors and around 60 staffs at the hospital. My father, income tax practitioner is the guiding
force behind this venture. “The multi-specialty hospital is set up with a vision to provide access
for the common man to advanced treatments, ensures twenty-four hours services and trauma
treatment with reduced rates.

“We also offer special privilege to senior citizens as well,” he adds. The hospital has created various packages that benefit corporate executives, thyroid patients, diabetic patients, elderly citizens, and women.
These packages provide comprehensive diagnostic and treatment options.

SUCCESS FACTORS

“I was never so patient before. Ever since we started setting up the hospital, I have mellowed
down,” he smiles and adds that patience is the key ingredient for the success of any business. B&B hospital has also introduced a new paradigm for the ease of patients. People prefer to stay in the hospital for a minimal time. As time is a precious factor, B&B has adopted day care surgery
for an appendectomy, hysterectomy, hernia, gall bladder, and varicose veins. “ This would,
therefore, help all inpatients who want to do routine planned surgeries,”

Nithin says that the success of any venture completely depends on the quality of service. “The
quality should match what we say. If we are charging Rs 10, the service quality should be worth Rs
11,” he articulates.

In a sector like a hospital service, Nithin has given thrust to get quality staff and also ensure
that they are happy working for him. “Human resource management is the biggest strength.
Staff is actually the king. This is because the staff delivers the service. Their well being
and their happiness are of utmost importance says Nithin, “The biggest stumbling
block for business is one’s own self. It’s the attitude that needs to be cultivated while
venturing into business.” When asked whether it is important for someone to work somewhere before entering into a business, Nithin replies with an affirmative. “I highly recommend that people
become an employee before they venture out on their own. At least 3-5 years of working in a company will give insights into doing business on your own,” he says.

“When the employee sees the vast gamut of responsibility the business owner does, it gives him a thorough understanding of the joy, pain, and trepidations of venturing out on your own,” he concludes.
